When I type underscore + shift + enter underneath a heading, it creates a full line. How do I get rid of it?

This happens in all versions of Microsoft Word... I can usually manage to delete the full lines that I just created, but I can't seem to get the ones to go away from a while ago. It's driving me crazy!!
